THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN IMAGENER AND YOTTAPRINT
How These Two Technologies Compare

Since the launch of YottaPrint some of our customers remain confused about the differences between YottaPrint and Imagener. How are these applications different and does one require the other?

Think of Imagener as a "general purpose" image enlargement application. It enlarges images for any display purpose - to display on a computer or other monitor (e.g. HDTV) or for printing the images out. All enlargements need Imagener because as we discussed in our April 2006 newsletter - click here, even photo software that costs hundreds of dollars cannot enlarge images without pixilation. Surprised? Well this statement continues to be true today — all modern photo software "algorithms" (mini-programs) used to enlarge images have not changed in literally decades.

Think of YottaPrint as a program with one specific purpose:  to create wall murals. Imagener does not have all of the needed functionality to create panels for wall murals. An expert in a photo software program like PhotoShop or CorelDraw could use Imagener to enlarge the image then pull the result into one of these programs to create panels for wall murals, but that process would require not only hours (days?) of time but the user would have to manually calculate margins and overlaps with a calculator which would not be practical. Even if someone did, they would have to make all of the hundreds of calculations over again if they wanted to change just one of the wall mural dimensions.

Look at the two images below. The first shows Imagener with an old photograph loaded. Photo enlargements look very clear and smooth viewed inside Imagener. The same image loaded into YottaPrint looks much grainier. This is because the squares you see are what YottaPrint will print as panels to assemble on the wall. YottaPrint prints pages very well using the Imagener Unlimited technology but it does not display images well on screen. This is by design as it would have taken much more memory to display images perfectly after Imagener's enlargement while at the same time performing all the calculations for wall mural panel pages. We created YottaPrint to display a lower grade image on the screen for orientation purposes only as the Imagener Unlimited enlargement engine needs as much memory as possible to perform. YottaPrint is about printing, not display.

Does YottaPrint Require Imagener?
No. YottaPrint and Imagener are completely self-contained programs. Both Imagener Unlimited and YottaPrint (all versions) have the Imagener Unlimited enlargement engine built inside. YottaPrint needs the strength of this engine because most images it enlarges will be very large.

An Historical Innovation
When we created YottaPrint we did it from the viewpoint of a software company not realizing that to the world of wall murals YottaPrint is truly new and original. After it was created and our first wall murals were made we realized that it is the first and only software that:

  • enlarges photos to a massive sizes without breaking them up into pixels
  • can get a photo on a wall from the floor to the ceiling - this was never before possible
  • gives thousands of people this ability because of its low price

No other software has yet been developed that can do that. YottaPrint represents a true innovation that only today's evolved computer hardware coupled with the most modern and advanced programming language C++ allows. Beyond this, we at Kneson Software were fortunate enough to find the Imagener Unlimited enlargement engine, acquired from a 3D gaming company (see our December 2005 newsletter on Imagener Unlimited's Vector Conversion). Our years of programming experience and the coincidence of finding this engine made the development of YottaPrint possible.

WHAT IS THE BEST PAPER FOR WALL MURALS?
Many of you have been asking about the kind of paper that is required to use YottaPrint. YottaPrint is intended to allow you to create great looking wall murals with just normal printer paper. You can of course use higher grade papers, and/or photographic quality paper with a high resolution photo printer for even better results. Then you just follow the instructions for putting up wallpaper - with the only differences in materials and procedures described here: CLICK FOR YOTTAPRINT.COM'S HELP PAGE.
Color Fading
No matter what paper you use, you should be aware that wall murals over time can experience color fading. This condition is related to the quality of the printer used and the quality of the ink available for it. You should carefully consider and research printers and inks to achieve a wall mural result that will have lasting quality. We mentioned this because we found normal copier or printer paper works just fine for long-term wall mural durability, but the ink used is of greater concern.
